Your pet was prescribed a medication. Now what?
Use as Directed
Be sure to follow all administration instructions given by your veterinarian.
-
Give the medication exactly as prescribed.
-
Don’t share pet meds with other animals or people.
Store Safely
Keep all medications in a medication lockbox, out of reach of children, teens, and animals.

Avoid leaving meds in purses, barns, tack boxes, or on counters.
Monitor Closely
Keep an eye on your pet medications!

-
Track how many doses you have and when they’re given.
-
Watch for missing medication bottles or pills.
Safe Disposal
Get rid of unused, unwanted, or expired pet medications.

-
Don’t save leftover medications “just in case.”
-
Use a local drop box, DEA Take Back Day, or at-home disposal kits

Why is prevention important?
-
Veterinary meds are strong: Opioids, sedatives, and other prescriptions given to pets or livestock can be just as addictive and dangerous as human medications.
-
Theft & misuse happens: Nearly every U.S. household has a pet, making homes a potential source of diversion.
-
Protecting your animals: Misuse can harm your animals if meds are stolen or misused.
-
Protecting your kids & community: Youth sometimes experiment with “easy to access” substances at home, including pet meds.
